There’s a new Tiger in Detroit, and his name is Johnny Damon. The 36-year old outfielder, who was released by the New York Yankees, following a World Series Championship last season, was surprisingly excited to be with his newest team.
Upon being signed by the Detroit Tigers for a one-year, $8 million contract, Johnny Damon said,
“This is where I wanted to be. The Tigers were my first choice. I love it here and think I am a good fit.”
Really? The Tigers were your first choice?
I find that hard to believe, especially after winning a World Series with the Yankees this past season. Maybe Damon is more concerned about location than winning right now. After all, he has won championships with both the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. I guess it is possible that other things are more important to Damon than winning at this point in his career.
But then I heard the following quote, and I once again questioned the original statement by Damon.
“It is where my family wanted to be. Contrary to what has been reported, I wanted a place where I could win right away. I have always been truthful and Detroit was always my first choice, and my wife and I are going to love it there.”
You wanted a place where you could win right away? So how could this be your first choice? You are coming off of a championship team! If you wanted to win right away, you would have wanted to stay with the Yankees! Sure, maybe they didn’t want you anymore, but don’t go around saying that Detroit was your first choice!
Everybody knows you still want to be a Yankee. There’s no need to lie about it.
